Situated alongside Houghton
Road, Houghton Regis, the Chalk Pit is the remnant
of a quarrying operation which began in the 1890’s and was a major industry for
the locality. The cessation of this in
1971 has left a number of ‘Marl’ lakes one of
which is the deepest chalk marl lake in the UK.
The preservation area includes a smaller lake and further ‘seasonal’
lakes, fen and willow scrub. The site is designated a SSSI for its charophyte
flora and rare molluscan fauna.
